Collection: Matic wines

In the barren hills of the Slovenian region of Štajerska, in the small village of Hekrat near the Austrian border, one of Slovenia's most exciting natural wines is produced on nine hectares. It is made by a winemaker who uncompromisingly follows his own path: Matija Žerjav, better known as Matic .
The young winemaker runs the family winery in its third generation, but his vision extends far beyond traditional methods. Biodynamic cultivation, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, no filtration, no unnecessary additives. Matic relies on nature, intuition, and experience. His wines are created with minimal intervention but maximum care. Every step, from hand-harvesting to bottling, is done by hand.
The steep slopes of Hekrat, with their calcareous and marl soils, challenge the vines to root deeply, resulting in pronounced minerality and freshness. The continental climate, with hot days and cool nights, contributes to intense aromas and a clear, vibrant acidity.
Matic prefers to work with indigenous grape varieties such as Šipon (Furmint), Yellow Muscat, Kerner, and Laški Riesling. The wines are vibrant, unpolished, yet always balanced, whether fermented on the skins, fermented in concrete eggs, or aged in single barrels. The Šipon is powerful, complex, and juicy. The Muscat shines golden yellow and offers floral and tropical notes with fine tannins. Even Sauvignon Blanc appears in a completely new form at Matic's winery, exhibiting depth, density, and a saline texture.
Matic represents a generation of winemakers who don't seek to please, but rather to express themselves. His wines are authentic, honest, and full of personality. Those who drink them experience not polished perfection, but character, wildness, and the soul of a terroir.
A visit to the winery is not a typical tasting, but an immersion into a world where wine still lives, breathes, and tells stories. Matic shows how exciting Slovenian wine can taste when it's allowed to express itself naturally.
